Description
The beautiful red covered bridge spanning the Battenkill River in the tiny hamlet of West Arlington is a Vermont icon. This is the very heart of Norman Rockwell country, small town America that inspires visions of quaint rural scenes where the landscape has barely changed since the 1950's.
Decades ago, this was a scene where visitors and leaf peepers could park down the road and walk out into open pasture to avoid climbing the very steep rocky cliff opposite the bridge itself. Since the 1980's the property owners became less fond of visitors disrespecting the land so they let the entire hillside grow in wild and fenced off the pasture. I knew I absolutely needed to capture this scene using high resolution modern photographic equipment, so with the help of some local Vermont friends we quickly assembled scaffolding safely just off the scenic route. This approach gained enough elevation to include the beautiful church spire, and spaced well in front of the thickly overgrown hillside to allow for a completely unobstructed view. This may be the ONLY image you'll ever see of this covered bridge without the view being obstructed with branches and leaf debris. I was able to capture several exposures before the low fog hanging in the Green Mountain National Forest backdrop dissipated.

This image of yours has become a New England icon. I read about the scaffold setup once before, how ingenious. You achieved the perfect height to reveal the church and that gorgeous foliage on the hillside
