Description
An especially dignified view of West Bennington's Old First Church as viewed from the olde town centre. West Bennington is the historic district and still maintains that olde town charm and unhurried pace.
This also happens to be one of Vermont's most historically significant locations. It is the site of the Battle of Bennington, where King George's mercenaries met a fateful defeat at the hands of Colonial Rebel soldiers. Those that died, British and Colonial Americans, were buried in a mass grave in the middle of the cemetery. Their final resting place, just behind and to the left of the historic architecture, could hardly be a more dignified quintessential New England setting.
Much of the early history of Bennington and of Vermont took place in and around the original Meeting House, built in 1763, and the present church, built in 1805. In 1935, Vermont's legislature had designated the old first meetinghouse as Vermont's "Colonial Shrine" and rightfully so!
The photographer has earned a reputation as one of New Englands most recognized and widely published photographic artist. This print in particular pairs wonderfully with his other artwork titled "Autumnal Carpet" which he made on the very same chilly late October afternoon.
