Description
Late October was the perfect time to photograph this historic hotel in Gaylordsville Ct. I shot here on a chilly overcast morning on the eve of Halloween. The vintage architecture, now restored to its old glory days, has long been rumored to be haunted.
Gaylordsville Ct has somewhat of an eerie, heavy presence despite its notable history. Just one mile away is the location of the "Washington Oak". The tree received its name and fame from the commonly accepted belief that George Washington held a staff meeting under the tree during the Revolutionary War.
Washington also is said to have met with the Marquis de Lafayette under the tree when the Colonial army stopped for lunch on its way from New York state to Hartford, where Washington hoped to persuade other French officers to join the war against England.
The tree’s fame grew over the centuries and it became a historical centerpiece in the hamlet of Gaylordsville. Its sheer longevity made it the oldest living landmark in Connecticut.
The Merwinsville hotel has its own place in history. The story of the hotel begins in 1837, when surveyors for the Housatonic Railroad were looking for the best route up the valley through Gaylordsville. The railroad needed the land, and the hotel, being somewhat midway between the ends of the proposed line, Bridgeport and Pittsfield, would make an excellent meal stop, so they agreed to the terms. When the first train arrived in 1843 the hotel was ready.
The hotel was occupied only until 1947. The local fire department used space in the remnant building to store the tens and chairs used for the tiny summer carnival for years. Ironically, a fire in the building ended that purpose, and the ghostly remnants were pray to souvinier hunters.
Currently, the building is undergoing a rejuvenation as renovation efforts persist.
